The Benefits of Essential Oil Massage

Essential oils are particularly beneficial when used in treatment by massage. By mixing the essential oil with a light vegetable oil carrier, such as almond or grapeseed oil, a massage is a gentle and highly enjoyable way of receiving the therapeutic benefits through smell and touch. Quite simply, regular massage will contribute to a dramatic improvement in general health and well-being. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin via hair follicles and then diffused into the blood and the lymph. Physiologically, the oils have an influence on the functions of the organs and tissues as well as the nervous systems controlling them. Additionally they have both antiseptic and antimicrobial actions, as well as the ability to stimulate the immune system to function more actively.

Use McLaren Vale Lavender massage oils liberally all over the body. Apply with the fingertips in smooth upward strokes over the arms and legs, upwards and outwards over the trunk and across the shoulders. The oil is most effective when applied after a bath.

Some Don'ts:

  • Do not massage anyone who has cancer, without first consulting his or her doctor
  • Do not massage anyone with an acute infection, fever or serious heart complaint
  • Wait until food has been digested before a massage and avoid varicose veins when massaging the legs, always work upwards towards the heart
  • If massaging your lover, it is inadvisable to massage the genitals

Checklist

  • Remove your watch and any rings
  • Make sure your nails are not too long. They should be short enough to allow you to massage with the pad of your finger without the nail digging into the skin
  • Have warm hands
  • Take the phone off the hook and dim the lights
  • Turn off the radio or television so the mind can relax although your ‘patient’ may like some soft music
  • Make sure you have everything you need before beginning the massage – massage oil, issues, large towels, so the continuity of the massage is not interrupted
  • Even in summer, ensure the room is warm enough, as the body can cool down considerably during a 30 minute massage
